Key West Lobster Charters

It's Hard to beat a day of Lobstering in the Florida Keys
One of my all time favorite things to do in Key West is spend a day hunting our delicious Florida Spiny Lobster. Also known as Caribbean Spiny Lobster they inhabit all tropical and sub-tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. They can be found in abundance down here in the crystal clear waters of The Florida Keys from Key Largo to Key West.

When is Lobster Season?
Lobster season in the Florida Keys begins in July with our 2 Day Mini Season typically the last Wednesday and Thursday of the month. It opens back up for our Regular Lobster season from August 6th through March 31st.

When is the best time to Lobster?
The first two days of Mini season and the First few weeks of August are the most productive but also the busiest times of year. Despite the pressure we find lobster throughout the season even into the winter months. Some of our best lobstering days have been the tail end of the season when most divers have all but forgotten about them.

How to Catch Lobster in the Florida Keys
The first step to catching lobster here in the Florida Keys is locating them. Lobster are social creatures and will often be found in groups underneath ledges, caves, coral heads, rock piles and ledges. Snorkeling  shallow waters typically between 3-10 feet deep you will search for the distinctive antennas poking out of their hiding spots. Once you've located some lobsters its time to use the tools of the trade. A tickle stick and net is the preferred method of harvesting but snares may also be used. The key is to slide the tickle stick behind the lobster and then carefully tap them from behind. Repeating this will walk the lobster out of their hiding spot until you can position the net behind the lobster. With a little coaxing the lobster will shoot backwards like a shrimp into your net and you'll want to get your hands on it quickly. Once you've trapped your lobster its time to measure him with a Lobster gauge and if it is legal size toss him in the boats live-well for dinner.

How to measure Florida Spiny Lobster
All lobster equipment will be provided on your charter included a mandatory lobster gauge. All lobster must be measured while in the water and short or egg bearing lobsters must be returned immediately. A lobster must have a carapace size of 3" or greater. It is measured from the beginning of the carapace (Hard head section) between the two horns and to the rear end of the carapace.
